From Middle High German zipf, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *tuppijô, *tuppijǭ (“tip”), a diminutive of *tuppaz.

Cognate with Dutch tip, Saterland Frisian Tip, English tip, Icelandic typpi. Also compare Zopf and Zapfen.
