Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese aleive. Further etymology is uncertain. Possibly Gothic 𐌻𐌴𐍅𐌾𐌰𐌽 (lēwjan, “to betray; to deceive”) or Arabic العَيْب (al-ʕayb).
