From Middle Breton autrou, from Old Breton altro, from Proto-Brythonic *alltrọw, from Proto-Celtic *altrawū (“foster-uncle”), from *aleti (“to nourish”). Cognate with Welsh alltraw (“godfather”) and Welsh athro (“teacher”).
