Usage notes
- In the second sense, the verbs it governs are conjugated in the third person (as Spanish usted).
- As a second person pronoun, it is seldom used nowadays, having been replaced by zu in virtually all formal situations. It is used to show great respect to the listener, as such it was used when addressing people such as priests or doctors.
