Attested since circa 1600. Probably an alteration of older Old Norse bœki (whence bæki), perhaps influenced by Danish bøg. Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bōkō (“beech”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂ǵos (“beech”).
