Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *buřa, akin to Bulgarian and Russian буря (burja), Serbo-Croatian bura, Slovak búrka and búrať (to crush). Non-Slavic cognates include Old Norse byrr (fair wind), Latin furō (I rage, rave), Sanskrit भुरति (bhurati, to stir, palpitate).
