From Proto-West Germanic *kalu, from Proto-Germanic *kalwaz (“bald”), from Proto-Indo-European *golHwos (“naked, bald”).
Cognate with Old Frisian *kalu, Old Saxon kalu, Old Dutch *kalo, Old High German kalo.
Latin calvus (“bald”) and Sanskrit कुल्व (kulva, “bald”) are false cognates and derive from a different PIE root.
