From Proto-Celtic *kengeti (tread, step, walk), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keng- (limp) (compare Old High German hinkan (to limp), Ancient Greek σκάζω (skázō, I limp) (from *skn̥gyóh₂)).
