Inherited from Vulgar Latin cottizāre or cottidiāre (compare Aromanian cutedz, cutidzari, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian cutez, Venetan scotezàr, Istriot cutisà, Aquileian scuttia, compare also Albanian kuxoj), from Ancient Greek κοττίζω (kottízō, “to play craps, shoot dice”).
