Inherited from Malay dedak, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *dəkdək (“pulverize, crush by pounding”) (compare Maguindanao dedek, Tagalog darak (“bran”) or Proto-Mon-Khmer *lʔək (“rice-bran”).
