From Old Cornish drain, from Proto-Brythonic *draɣen, from Proto-Celtic *dregenom (sloe, blackthorn). Cognate with Breton draen, Irish draighean (sloe, blackthorn), Manx drine, Scottish Gaelic droigheann, and Welsh draen, drain.
