From Old Swedish dyghþ (“virtue”), from Old Norse dygð, cognate with Norwegian dygd, Danish dyd, from Proto-Germanic *dugiþō, a variant of *dugunþō in English douth, German Tugend, Dutch deugd. These words are derived from the verb *duganą (“to be useful”), hence Swedish duga.
