From Middle Irish echtrad, from echtra (tale, narrative, history), from Old Irish echtar (without, outside), from Proto-Celtic *exteros. Doublet of eachtradh. Cognate with Irish eachtra (adventure). Compare Welsh eithr (except, beyond), Latin exter (outer).
