From Middle Irish echtrad, from echtra (“tale, narrative, history”), from Old Irish echtar (“without, outside”), from Proto-Celtic *exteros. Doublet of eachtradh. Cognate with Irish eachtra (“adventure”). Compare Welsh eithr (“except, beyond”), Latin exter (“outer”).
