From Dutch elastiek, from French élastique, from New Latin elasticus (elastic), from Ancient Greek ἐλαστός (elastós), alternative form of ἐλατός (elatós, ductile) (cf. ἐλατήρ (elatḗr, a driver, hurler)), from ἐλαύνω (elaúnō, to drive, set in motion, push, strike, beat out).
