Etymology
Borrowed from Old Occitan empaitar, empachar, from Vulgar Latin *impāctāre, from impāctum, perfect passive participle of Latin impingō (“to drive, force”). Alternatively, from Latin impedicāre (“to fetter, entangle”), in which case it is a doublet of empatxar.
