Etymology
From ergon (“work”) + -al (“pertaining to”), in analogy to thermal (“pertaining to heat”), coined by John Tyndall as "thermal and ergonal content" (1867, p. 357) in the translation of Rudolf Clausius' phrase Wärme- und Werkinhalt (1865).
