Inherited from Old French fermail (also fermeil, fermal), from Vulgar Latin *firmāc(u)lum, a noun derived from Latin firmāre (“make fast”). By surface analysis, fermer +‎ -ail. Compare Occitan fermalh, Italian fermaglio.
