finfish (plural finfishes or finfish)

  1. Any fish, but especially fish other than flatfish
  2. (informal) Clipped compound of finned fish, as in e.g. ray-finned fish; used to distinguish them from shellfish, cartilaginous fish and other similar aquatic creatures customarily used as food.

Usage notes

  • Used industrially to denote ordinary fish, rather than flatfish, eels and other seafood animals.
