Derived from the adjective frjáls (“free”), from Proto-Germanic *frijahalsaz (“freedom; free”), cognate with Old English frēols, Middle High German vrīhals, Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌻𐍃 (freihals) (all nouns). This word is a compound of *frijaz (“free”) + *halsaz (“neck”).
