Etymology
From Middle High German geneuwe, genöuwe, an umlauted variant of genouwe (“narrow, precise”). The umlautless form is attested in dialectal Luxembourgish as gena. The form genau can be an eastern variant of this, but may also be from cognate German genau. Further cognate with Dutch nauw (without prefix).
