Etymology

Equivalent to ġe- + *wield. Origin uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *gawaldī (power, might), cognate with Old High German giwalti. Alternatively, perhaps a merger of Proto-West Germanic *wald (might, power, authority) and *waldi (compare Old Saxon giwald f or n); or derived from Old English ġewieldan (to exercise power, rule over).
