Equivalent to ġe- + *wield. Origin uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *gawaldī (“power, might”), cognate with Old High German giwalti. Alternatively, perhaps a merger of Proto-West Germanic *wald (“might, power, authority”) and *waldi (compare Old Saxon giwald f or n); or derived from Old English ġewieldan (“to exercise power, rule over”).
