First attested in 1571, a borrowing from Spanish or Old Spanish guisa; itself likely from Gothic *𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍃𐌰 (*weisa, way, manner), from Proto-Germanic *wīsō (way, method, etc.), related to *wīsaz (wise).
