Late 16th century borrowing from New Latin glōttis, from Ancient Greek γλωττῐ́ς (glōttĭ́s, mouth of the windpipe), from γλῶττᾰ (glôttă, tongue) + -ῐς (-ĭs, feminine noun suffix). Cognates include Latin gula.
