Cognate with Low German gnid (gnit), German Gnitte, Gnitze (midge, gnat). Compare also Danish gnid (gnat), Swedish gnet (nit), Norwegian gnit (gnat), Icelandic gnit, nitur (gnat). Related to gnat.
