Etymology

Uncertain. According to different sources, may be related to gopel (“a dirt mass”), Old Norse gaupn (“gowpen”) or Southern Sami gåbloe (“lung”) (compare Finnish kupla (“bubble”)).

(fireweed): May be from Southern Sami boeltʼaajjan-gåbloe (“fireweed”), literally “bear lung”. The form bjønngoppel (from bjønn) is also attested (in northern dialects). On the other hand, Gouple meaning fireweed is attested by Christen Jensøn in 1646 in Askvoll, far away from Sami language area.
