- To sing as a form of begging, especially to sing hymns badly with the aim of soliciting donations out of sympathy.
- 1908, W. H. Davies, chapter 31, in The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp:
- He also gridled sacred hymns in the streets, and sung sporting songs in the alehouses.
