From Proto-Philippine *hípun (small shrimp). Compare Cebuano hipun (tiny shrimp) and Mansaka ipon (small fish). See also Central Dusun tipun (shrimp). The butterface sense is from people eating the body of the shrimp and treating the head as undesirable by throwing it away. Compare Spanish gamba (shrimp; butterface).
