Etymology
From Middle High German hoppeln, iterative form of hoppen. The latter is formally a Low German and Central German variant of hüpfen (“to hop”) (from Middle High German hüpfen or hupfen; it is also present, however, in Alemannic dialects (where it may be borrowed from the North or formed independently through onomatopoeia). By surface analysis, hoppen + -eln.
