Compound of ide (“yew”) + gran (“spruce”), from Old Swedish idhe, yew, from Old Norse *iði, from *iðja (“greenery”, literally “yew + collective suffix”), from an earlier *īṷiþia, from Proto-Germanic *īwiþia, *īhwiþia, a collective form of *īhwaz (“yew”) + *-iþia (“collective suffix”). Compare Swedish vide (“willow”), vidja (“withy, wattle”).
