Learned borrowing from Ecclesiastical Latin catēchismus, from Ancient Greek *κατηχισμός (*katēkhismós, “katēkhismos”), from κατηχίζω (katēkhízō, “to catechize”), a later extended form of κατηχέω (katēkhéō, “to catechize, instruct, teach by word of mouth”), from κατά (katá, “down”) + ἠχέω (ēkhéō, “to sound, to resound”).
