Etymology 1
Cognate with Proto-Slavic *klonъ (“fold, bend”). From Proto-Balto-Slavic *klánas, probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (“to crook, to bend”). The original meaning was "a depression". klónis (“valley”) is from the same root.
