From Middle Cornish crohen, from Proto-Brythonic *kroxen, from Proto-Celtic *krokkenom, possibly from a substrate language. Cognate with Breton kroc'hen, Irish and Scottish Gaelic craiceann, Manx cracken, and Welsh croen.
