From the genus name.

lepas (plural lepases)

  1. (archaic) Any of the genus Lepas of pedunculated barnacles found attached to floating timber, bottoms of ships, etc.; a goose barnacle.
    • 1801, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, A Catalogue of the Whole Contents of the Celebrated Museum formed by M. De Calonne, page 58:
      60. The tiger tower, a mitres, a lithophagus, a purple rayed solen, a lepas, and 9 other shells.
    • 1835, W. B. Clarke, “Remarks on some Barnacles of the Species Lepas antifera found floating off St. Adhelm's Head, on the Coast of Dorset”, in The Magazine of natural history, volume 8, page 116:
      The peduncles of the lepases are flexible; and Dr. Weatherill has ascribed to the species which he has noticed in V. 339–342., the power of availing itself of this flexibility in "extending, shrinking, and writhing itself at pleasure."
    • 1847, Joseph Beete Jukes, Narrative of the Surveying Voyage of H. M. S. Fly, page 141:
      It was probably either a large mytilus, a meleagrina, or a pinna, and was certainly not a lepas.
