From Middle Welsh llei (comparative of llaw (“small”)), from Proto-Brythonic *llaɣü (comparative of *llaɣw), from Proto-Celtic *lagyūs (comparative of *legus (“small”)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lengʷʰ- (“lightweight”). Cognate with Old Irish laigiu.
