From Middle Welsh losc, from Proto-Brythonic *llosk, from the Proto-Celtic *lasketi (to shine, burn), from Proto-Indo-European *lh₂p-sḱéti, from *leh₂p- (to light, shine).

Cognate with Irish loisc (burn; sting) and Ancient Greek λάμπω (lámpō, I shine).
