From Proto-Cushitic *mazkʷ-/*mizkʷ- (“right side”). A verb in Beja miyakw (“to be dexterous”) may be the original meaning. Cognate with Aweer midig, Rendille miig, Jiiddu meeg/mayg, Arbore midda, El Molo migit, Oromo mirgaa, Khonso mikta, Afar migda, Yaaku maqayo, Beja mayikwa.
