From German Monazit, from Ancient Greek μονάζω (monázō, be solitary).

monazite (plural monazites)

  1. (mineralogy) any of a range of reddish-brown minerals that are mixed phosphates of the lighter rare earth elements lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium and yttrium
