Karao
Etymology
Noun
obda
Maltese
Etymology
Borrowed from Sicilian obbidiri, ubbidiri and/or Italian obbedire, ubbidire, both from Latin oboedire. The Maltese imperfect tense looks like a native form, whence the Semitic (alternative) past participle. The regularisation of the past tense into *beda was hindered by the unrelated beda (“to begin”).
