Inherited from Vulgar Latin oclus, from Latin oculus, from Proto-Italic *okelos, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃okʷ-, *h₃ekʷ- (“eye; to see”). Compare Italian occhio. Doublet of oculus, borrowed through French.
