Finnish
Pronunciation
Participle
oleva
- present active participle of olla
- Pihallani oleva auto ei ole minun - se kuuluu leasing-yhtiölle.
- The car that is in my yard is not mine - it belongs to a leasing firm.
- Myöhässä oleva bussi on parempi kuin ei bussia ollenkaan.
- A bus that is late is better than no bus at all.
Usage notes
- oleva is used when adverbs are used attributively or substantively, like in the latter example above. Some of the more common examples are sometimes mistakenly spelled as one word; oleva is, however, spelled separately.
- Bussi on myöhässä. ― The bus is late. → myöhässä oleva bussi ― the late bus
- Can be used with present passive participles in inessive plural (allative plural for some verbs) to represent “-able/-ible” (able to be X'ed). As in the above case, oleva is then dropped if used predicatively.
- kiistää (“to deny”) → kiistettävissä oleva (“deniable”)
