Etymology

From Ancient Greek φυτόν (phutón, plant).

Noun

phyton (plural phytons or phyta)

  1. (botany) One of the parts which by their repetition make up a flowering plant, each being a single joint of a stem with its leaf or leaves.
  2. The smallest cutting from a root, stem, or leaf that can grow into a new plant.
