Inherited from Middle French pieu, a backformation from Old French peus, pex, nominative singular and oblique plural of pel, from Latin pālus (“post, stake”), from Proto-Italic *pākslos, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ǵ-slos, from *peh₂ǵ-. Doublet of pal, which is of either dialectal or learned origin.
