Usage notes

Some writers prescribe that ppt should be reserved consistently to its "parts per trillion" sense (sense 1) and that when "parts per thousand" is meant (sense 2) it should instead be expressed as ‰ (permille); the idea is to prevent any reader from ever possibly making a 10⁹ missense error when reading. Many writers either overrule this advice or are unaware of it.
