From a derivative of Proto-West Germanic *sail, from Proto-Germanic *sailaz (“silent”), from Proto-Indo-European *seyl- (“to be silent”) + -nes (“-ness”). Related to Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐍃𐌹𐌻𐌰𐌽 (anasilan, “to cease, become silent”), Latin sileō (“be silent”), Old English seoloþ (“sea, lake”).
