Borrowed from Middle French escroue, from Latin scrōfa (“female pig”) through comparison with the corkscrew shape of a pig's penis. Compare Old French escruve, from Old Dutch *scrūva ("screw"; whence Middle Dutch schruyve (“screw”)).
