From Middle Dutch schudden, from Old Dutch scudden, from Proto-West Germanic *skuddjan, from Proto-Germanic *skudjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kuh₁t-yé-ti. Cognate with German schütten (“to pour”) and the iterative schütteln (“to shake”).
