Borrowed from Dutch symptoom, from Ancient Greek σύμπτωμα (súmptōma, “a happening, accident, symptom of disease”), stem of συμπίπτω (sumpíptō, “Ι befall”), from συν- (sun-, “together”) + πίπτω (píptō, “I fall”).
