Likely borrowed from Middle Low German slīren, at least as a naval term. Compare origin of English slide, slither, Middle English slideren.

- to slip, to slide, to skid (due to lack of traction, for example during slippery road conditions)
- Jag försökte bromsa, men däcken slirade
- I tried to brake, but the tires were slipping

- The car spun its wheels in place and got nowhere
- (figurative) to have poor traction with something, like the truth
