Swedish

Etymology

slutta (slope (downwards)) + -ning (-ing)

Noun

sluttning c

  1. an area of sloping ground; a slope, a hillside
    Synonym: (loosely) backe
    kullens sluttning
the side of the hill / the hillside

Usage notes

  • Intuitively, backe puts more emphasis on the slope (possibly) being part of a path or traversed, while a sluttning is an area of sloping ground more generally. This makes backe the natural word for a ski slope (skidbacke), for example, where "skidsluttning" sounds more like "ski incline." Native speakers might sometimes use backe where sluttning would be more idiomatic according to this intuition.
  • Lutning is usually more idiomatic when talking about degree of slope, though sluttning appears as well (for downward slope – see slutta, from which sluttning would intuitively be derived in this case).
