Perhaps from an earlier form *sōd-, from Proto-Indo-European *sed- (“to sit”), whence eistedd (“to sit”); compare English soot. Alternatively, the earlier form is *stā-dh-, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (“to stand”), whence sefyll (“to stand, stop”).
